Day 1

Travelers can reach Kochi via train or air. There are two railway stations in Kochi.

  1. Ernakulam South
  2. Ernakulam North

Ernakulam South is the main junction and it is the busiest of the two. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL). It is the largest and the busiest airport in Kerala. There are flights to and from all the major airports in India, Middle East, and other regions. Passengers will be received by Bluebird travels and from there onwards you will get a chance to experience our unique hospitality.

Guruvayur Temple is 93 kilometers away from Kochi and it will take around 2 hours to reach there. Most part of the travel is through NH66 and road conditions are very good presently. The temple as its primordial stage was present at Guruvayur from 5000 years ago.

The central shrine of Guruvayur temple was built in 1638 A.D. Guruvayur temple is an epitome of religious and cultural perseverance of Keralites. The existence of Guruvayur temple was threatened thrice in recorded history.

  1. In 1716 by the Dutch – The ransacked the temple and set fire to the temple complex. It had to wait until 1747 A.D. to have rebuilt into its pristine order.
  2. In 1766, Haider Ali came close to plundering the temple as part of his Malabar invasion. But, he spared the temple for a reason of 10000 Ferams offered by Vadakkepat Variyar.
  3. In 1789, Haider Ali’s son Tipu Sultan started his Malabar raids with an aim to overthrow Zamorin. One of his main agenda was to destroy temples and convert Hindus of Malabar to Islam. Fearing destruction the main deity was hidden underground and the processional deity was taken to Ambalapuzha. He plundered the temple and set the fire. But, as if the rain god interfered there was a timely rain and it saved the temple from catastrophe.

Bluebird travels let you get immersed in the historical tranquility of Guruvayur. Every step you walk around this shrine takes you back to the rich religious and cultural history of Guruvayur. Once inside the shrine, try to recreate the feelings of famous five devotees of Guruvayoorappan who propagated the glory – Poonthanan, Melpattur, Vilvamangalam, Kururamma and the Zamorin Manadevan when they had the surreal opportunity to see with their eyes Guruvayoorappan.

Important festivals – Janmashtami, Kumbham utsavam, Ekadasi.
